The long wait is finally over as the 2026-27 Premier League season officially commenced over the weekend, delivering a dramatic opening round filled with surprise results, record-breaking stats, and last-minute drama. It wasn’t just England where the action started, as top divisions across Europe have also begun their campaigns.
This year’s Premier League kickoff delivered the unpredictability the competition is famous for, highlighted by some seismic results. Hull City stunned Manchester United with a dominant 2-0 victory. This marked Hull’s first league win over United in an astonishing 52 years, with their previous victory coming way back in 1974.
Another historic result saw Brentford thrash Tottenham Hotspur 3-0, securing their first home league victory over Spurs in 78 years. The Bees were hugely superior, registering 3.96 expected goals compared to Spurs’ 0.47, underscoring their dominance in front of goal.

Italy’s Serie A kicked off on August 22, with defending champions Inter Milan hosting Monza in the opener. The opening weekend featured a full slate of matches, including high-profile fixtures like Torino versus AC Milan. This season marks the league’s 125th edition.
Spanish football is already in action, having started on August 14-15. The season began with Barcelona playing away at Elche. The much-anticipated El Clásico fixtures between Real Madrid and Barcelona are also set, with dates scheduled later in the campaign. The season will conclude on May 30, 2027.
Germany’s Bundesliga is also preparing for its new season. While all teams currently show zero games played, the league is gearing up for what promises to be a competitive campaign to unseat Bayer Leverkusen at the top, with heavyweights Bayern Munich also looking to reclaim the title.
In France, Ligue 1 has seen its first matches take place. Olympique de Marseille lead the standings after the opening weekend, having recorded a notable victory. Reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) were held to a 2-2 draw away at Rennes, with new signing Ferran Torres scoring the equalizer to salvage a point for the French champions.
With all the top European leagues now in full swing, the 2026-27 season is shaping up to be a thrilling one, filled with new narratives, record chases, and the usual blend of brilliance and unpredictability.
