The Senegalese national team widely known as ‘The Lions of Teranga’ have clinched the Afcon 2026 Cup in a tightly contested match against the host nation, Morocco.
Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye scored the only goal in the fourth minute of extra time to seal a second triumph in four years for the Lions in a chaotic final on Sunday, which at one point saw Senegal’s players leave the field to protest a penalty decision.
CAF president Patrice Motsepe deserves enormous praise for the way he and his colleagues have organised this tournament but, ultimately, it will be remembered for unprecedented controversy once again.
The hero of the day is none other than African footballing icon Sadio Mane who has taken his team to two AFCON titles and probably covers the forward’s legacy.
